I’ve been with my fiancé, Adam, for six years, and we were set to marry next month. However, during a visit to my parents’ house, Adam discovered their unconventional lifestyle, which made him question everything.
We were staying in my old room before the wedding, but Adam wasn’t thrilled about it. I convinced him it would be a nostalgic experience. After a nice dinner with my family, things took an unexpected turn. That night, Adam couldn’t sleep and went for a walk, only to return in shock. He had witnessed my mom kissing another man in the foyer, leading him to accuse her of cheating.
In the chaos, my mom explained that their marriage was unconventional and open, something I had known about but struggled to share with Adam. He felt betrayed and left for a hotel, needing time to process everything.
I joined him later, and we decided to move to my grandmother’s house for the rest of the visit to keep things calm. After a difficult week, we agreed to stay together but recognized the need for therapy to address his trauma and my own struggles with my parents’ choices.
We’re working through it now, focusing on healing and understanding each other’s fears and shame. It’s a journey, but we’re committed to seeing where it leads.
