When Olivia noticed her stepson Josh acting withdrawn after visits to his biological mom’s house, she became increasingly concerned. Every Sunday at 5 p.m., like clockwork, Josh returned from his mom’s place in a sullen mood. Though Patrick chalked it up to Josh’s mom, Linda, being strict, Olivia wasn’t convinced. Josh had handled structure well before. This change felt different — darker.
Despite Olivia and Patrick’s efforts to lift his spirits with fun meals and movie nights, nothing seemed to help. Then one Sunday, the family’s smart security system kicked in as Josh arrived home, automatically displaying the porch footage on their TV. What Olivia heard next stopped her cold.
Josh’s mom, Linda, handed him cookies and reminded him of “what he had to do.” Josh resisted, telling her he didn’t want to lie anymore and revealing she’d been making him steal items — from Olivia’s toiletries to valuables and even cash from Patrick’s emergency stash.
Shocked and heartbroken, Olivia confronted Linda on the spot. Linda admitted she was drowning in debt and had pressured Josh to help her by stealing from his father’s home. Olivia offered her financial help on the condition that she leave Josh out of it going forward.
Josh, finally unburdened, broke down in Olivia’s arms, apologizing and expressing his relief. Olivia reassured him they would fix things together — without more secrets or shame.
