My Friend Asked Me to Find out What Her Date Thinks of Her While I Was in a Clown Costume, but I Had No Idea How It Would End

Being a radio host giving dating advice doesn’t make love any easier—especially after crashing my best friend Lucy’s first date dressed as a clown. That night led to unexpected feelings and a situation I never saw coming.

Lucy, always excited about a new crush, gushed about Mike, a man she hadn’t met in person yet. When Friday arrived, I was stuck entertaining kids at my niece’s birthday party in a clown costume when Lucy texted, panicked about her date. Reluctantly, I went to help.

At the bar, Mike and I hit it off unexpectedly over a shared love of old films. Lucy noticed our chemistry and teased me, but I insisted he was her date. Still, Mike seemed more interested in talking to me. When he later texted me asking to meet, I turned him down—he’d been on a date with my friend, and I wouldn’t cross that line.

Days later, Mike called into my radio show, confessing his feelings live on air. To my surprise, Lucy called in, giving her blessing and urging me to follow my own advice: “Listen to your heart.” Torn but encouraged, I finally said yes.

That moment, though embarrassing, was also liberating—and for once, I chose to take my own advice.
