I thought my father’s will would secure my future, until the lawyer mentioned a name I didn’t recognize—Brenna. My grandmother, Loretta, was furious. Who was she, and why did my father leave everything to her?
Loretta had raised me with strict rules after my mother’s death. Everything had to be perfect—grades, posture, and even napkins. When my father passed, Loretta took charge of managing his estate. But when the lawyer read the will, I learned my father had a daughter I never knew about—Brenna. Loretta couldn’t believe it, insisting it was a mistake.
A few days later, I visited Brenna’s modest home. She greeted me warmly, and though her life was simple, she seemed content. She told me our father had left her a “gift” in the will. We spent the week together, and I began to see a different side of life, free from Loretta’s control.
But Loretta kept pushing, urging me to get Brenna to give up the inheritance. I started questioning my role in the situation, especially after Loretta’s harsh words about Brenna’s mother. Eventually, I found letters revealing Loretta’s role in keeping Brenna and her mother away from my father. It became clear that Loretta had destroyed this family.
I confronted Loretta, rejecting her plans, and apologized to Brenna. Despite the tension, she simply asked if I wanted pancakes. And for the first time, I felt like I was making my own choices.
